The MC Number Is the Wrong Thing to Underwrite

Insurers and lenders price the age of the MC number because it is the easiest thing to see. A twelve-year company driver with a clean record who just filed his own authority gets treated almost the same as a 23-year-old with two years on a CDL.

Meanwhile the things that actually predict failure go unpriced. Does the operator know their cost per mile? Have they budgeted for the new entrant safety audit? Do they run lanes they know, or chase whatever pays today?

The authority date is a proxy. The behavior is the risk.

Many new operators came up as drivers, not business owners. They price load by load, fear deadhead more than cheap freight, and take bad rates to keep the wheels turning. That habit, not the filing date, is the failure signal.

Almost nobody in the capital or insurance stack is looking at it. The partner who does can tell the carrier who will scale from the one who will stall, and that is the introduction worth making.
